Amit K. Chopra

I am a Senior Lecturer (broadly equivalent to Associate Professor) in the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University (CV).

I run the multiagent systems laboratory. I am especially interested in multiagent settings where the agents represent autonomous principals, such as humans and organizations. Such settings, which we refer to as sociotechnical systems, demand loosely-coupled architectures that support flexible interactions between agents.

We have developed a novel, foundational approach called Interaction-Oriented Programming to address the requirements of sociotechnical systems. IOP started as a philosophy in the mid-90’s but has now come of age, boasting world-leading declarative languages for modeling multiagent interactions; approaches for verifying them; and programming models for implementing intelligent agents. IOP is founded in interaction meaning and accommodates asynchrony like no other approach in computing. IOP goes against conventional wisdom in several established areas of computing.
